La Tavola Osca è uno dei reperti più importanti dei popoli italici e in particolare dei Sanniti, popolo di valorosi guerrieri e agricoltori, abitanti l’Italia centrale; gli unici capaci di sconfiggere e umiliare le legioni romane.
Realizzata in bronzo e incisa su entrambe le facciate tra II e III secolo a.C. in lingua Osco-Sannita, riporta i nomi delle divinità venerate dai Sanniti e richiamate durante il Saahtúm Tefúrúm, rito propiziatorio annuale durante il quale si tenevano sacrifici in loro onore, per garantire fertilità e raccolti generosi.
Il teatro di questo rituale era l’Hùrz, ovvero il Giardino Sacro, e al suo interno sorgevano gli altari dedicati alle divinità, che erano agresti, celesti e infere, e la più importante e influente era Kerres, propiziatrice della crescita e dea della vegetazione e delle messi. ‘Giardino’ o ‘Orto’ Sacro perché i primi luoghi di culto sanniti sorgevano in luoghi aperti, boschi e vallate, dove a predominare era la natura.
La Tavola Osca fu rinvenuta casualmente nel 1848 dal contadino Pietro Tisone in Alto Molise, durante i lavori in preparazione del terreno per la semina, nei pressi di Fonte del Romito, tra Agnone e Capracotta, lungo le pendici del Monte San Nicola. Da allora la sorte della Tavola si fa oscura e misteriosa, fino al 1867, quando un antiquario romano, il Castellani, l'acquistò e, a sua volta, vendette la Tavola Osca al British Museum di Londra nel 1873.
ENGLISH
The Tavola Osca is one of the most important finds of the Italic peoples and in particular of the Samnites, a tribe of brave warriors and farmers, inhabitants of central Italy; the only ones able to defeat and humiliate the Roman Legions.
Made in bronze and engraved on both sides between the II and III century b.C. in the Osco-Sannita language, it shows the names of the deities worshiped by the Samnites and recalled during the Saahtúm Tefúrúm, an annual propitiatory rite during which sacrifices were held in their honor, to guarantee fertility and generous harvests.
The theater of this ritual was Hùrz, or Holy Garden, and within it stood the altars dedicated to the deities, which were rural, heavenly and infernals, and the most important and influential of them was Kerres, propitiatory of growth and goddess of vegetation and crops. It was called 'Holy Garden' because the first Samnite places of worship rose in open places, woods and valleys, where nature was predominant.
The Tavola Osca was discovered by chance in 1848 by the farmer Pietro Tisone in Alto Molise, while working in preparation of the soil for sowing, near Fonte del Romito, between Agnone and Capracotta, along the slopes of Monte San Nicola.
After having kept it for a few months, the farmer gave it to his master Giangregorio Falconi, who showed it to the agnese goldsmith Vincenzo Paolo D'Onofrio during a fair, and he asked to see it.
Falconi accepted and it seems that during the visit of the Cremonese and D'Onofrio to his house, they managed to make a copy of it secretly.
Since then the fate of the Table becomes obscure and mysterious, until 1867, when D'Onofrio sold it to a Roman antiquarian, the Castellani, who in turn sold the Tavola to the British Museum in London in 1873.

The atmosphere of this album is fantastic. Makes you feel like you're knee-deep in the trenches drenched in mud, filth, sweat, and blood. Truly encapsulates the horrors of World War I, and the fact that the lyrics of some of the songs are taken from old war letters really adds to the authenticity.
